CRESSKIL, N.J. – Joe Yoshiya Fuchida, a resident of Cresskil, died Tuesday, June 28.
He was born in Japan and came to the United States in 1957 and became an American citizen in 1965.
He studied at Waseda University in Japan and in the U.S., he studied architecture at the University of Oregon and Columbia University. He earned a license to practice architecture in New York and New Jersey and was certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards which entitled him to reciprocal registration in the fifty states and U.S. territories.
He also held a first class architect license in Japan. In 1972, he started private practice in New York City with an architectural firm serving the business community. In time the firm developed from a start-up specializing in corporate architecture to an internationally recognized, award winning design firm.
The firm's clients included major corporations in the U.S and abroad as well as the City of New York, the U.S. Postal Service and Canadian Pacific. Geographically, completed projects spanned many states as well as internationally in Japan, China, Canada, the U.K. and Germany.
A longtime Cresskill resident, he served eight years on the Cresskill Planning Board.
He retired from his practice in 2003. In retirement, he contributed articles on architecture to journals and other publications in Japan.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; children John, Ellen Hawley and her husband James Devereaux; grandchildren Bennett and Adeline; sister, Miyako Fuchida Overturf; and many brothers and sisters-in-law.
The funeral will be private with a memorial to be scheduled for a later date.
